Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford was first attracted to acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
