McCormack has a father who is a medical therapist, and owner of an ice cream shop. She comes from a family that is not entertainment-based. After her parents divorced in 1990, she was enrolled at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut and graduated with the degree of BA in Comparative Art. In the early years of her career, she was only twelve when she was on stage for an opera production entitled "Amahl's Night Visitor". In the course of her work as a stage actress, McCormack ultimately gained roles for both films and television. McCormack has been recognized as one of the best known and most versatile performers. She has three daughters with her husband, producer/director Michael Morris.
